The reality of our current job market requires people to become more strategic and proactive in planning and managing their careers. Have a long-term career strategy, or at the very least, a sense of where you’re headed. Ask yourself, “What do I really want to do?” or “Where do I see myself in five to 10 years?” While you are doing this try to connect the dots and make sure your goals match with your company’s vision and key objectives. How does your work align with the organization’s goals? What can you do to maximize your contributions?
Control your own destiny. Take control of your career planning. Evaluate and reevaluate where you want your career to go and what you need to do to get there. Realize in this market companies have stepped away from providing outside classes for advancement so you may have to take the initiate for this on your own.

Be your own cheerleader, advertise your goals. Prioritize the development of positive relationships with people, and build a reputation as being someone who is helpful and supportive of others.
Network for opportunities within your organization, ask for advice. Don’t rely on the kindness or good intentions of a supervisor. Try to find ways to network with others in the organization by volunteering for projects that involve other areas of the organization or looking for people who can serve as mentors.
